Introduction

Throughout the ages, Muslims have looked up to the heavens for both spiritual and secular purposes. The very religion of Islam has been the motivation behind this endeavor of its followers. The Holy Quran, time and again urges the believers to ponder over the heavenly bodies as signs:

And so henceforth started the Islamic quest to learn more about what is out there in the space around our planet. Muslims were the first ones to build buildings dedicated to the observation and charting of the stars above; observatories.

And [a]He has pressed into service for you the night and the day, and the sun and the moon; and the stars too have been pressed into service by His command. Surely, in that are Signs for a people who make use of their reason. (16:13)
